Evening primrose oil has been used for many years as a rich source of the Omega 6 essential fatty acids Linoleic Acid (LA) and its derivative Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). Although GLA can usually be made from Linoleic Acid within the body, certain conditions block the function of the Delta-6-Desaturase enzyme that converts essential fatty acids into their derivatives. Saturated fats, cholesterol, trans-fatty acids, viral infections and zinc deficiency inhibit the function of D-6-D enzyme and it becomes less efficient with age.
